Marwencol

Standard

A documentary about mark hogancamp. He poses gi joes and barbies to make a continuous narrative. It’s a way for him to work out his issues of events from his past. Kelt wanted to watch it and he said he was very inspired by it.
It was very interesting to get his story because I’m not sure I would have appreciated the photos with no background info. That’s something I need to work on.

Thrift Shop Painting Critique

Standard

I was really excited to finish the thrift shop painting. Even though I didnt stray far from Wayne White, I think I did move far enough away from his work to make it my own.  I was bummed that there were a lot of absences and we did not get to critique everyone else’s work. Overall, I believe the ones that did show up were pretty succesful and I enjoyed looking at them.

Critique of the year

Standard

I was very nervous but excited to have a visiting artist critique my work. I have a lot if prints to choose from, but I distilled down to an example of each kind of composition I am working with. Feedback was not near as hard as I thought it would be and it needed to be done. I am now excited to get started on my new work.

Critique

Standard

It seems as if the semester is dwindling down. It has flown by! I am very glad I took advanced concepts this semester. I have always been told that my greatest asset is my concept. But with my work I have always felt like I had to over-complicate to get my point across. This weekend I’ve been sick and watched a lot of art:21 episodes. It’s inspiring at how some of the older generation of artists look at concept. A lot of them see the product as the concept. The piece of art that they have is the end. Thats how they see it and if the viewer cares to add content they can. I’ve always made art because I loved it. I didn’t need a reason to do it. There was no message I had in my head that I wanted to communicate that I wouldn’t just speak of. It’s rather refreshing to be on both sides though. I know I don’t have to over-work pieces because I have the desire to kill every piece I get my hands on. I’m finding peace in simplicity and clear conception.

Barbara Krueger

Standard

Since I have declared myself a conceptual artist and have incorporated text into my work I have been looking at a lot of advertisements and propaganda. I have looked to a few different text artists but I have forgotten about Barbara Krueger. I have always enjoyed her work for many reasons. Its usually black, white and red which are my favorite colors and the most powerful of color combinations as far as I am concerned. Her messages always appeal to me on different levels and I really appreciate that in work. In working with text it is easy for the concept to be interpreted in .38492273 of a second and then the interaction between work and observer is over.

Appropriation

Standard

For some reason my app for word press keeps locking up my phone, annoying iphone. ANYWHO I ill be appropriating the words “you need me” into a large landscape velvet painting I found at the flea market. It is 4 ft long and 2 ft wide in a pretty decent wooden frame. I am going to incorporate the letters into the landscape and render them 3 dimensionally. I have thought about making them look like industrial or corporate buildings. Dustyn gave me the idea of collaging different logos such as Mcdonalds which I am an uber un-fan of. Considering it would be going onto velvet it may not work but I will experiment with the idea.
